YAYASAN HASANAH (YH) – CHILD CITS PROGRAMME 2018 ANNUAL STARTEGIC PLANNING WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS ON 20 -21 MARCH 2018 AT CHILD OFFICE, SENTUL

Introduction

The objectives of the Annual Strategic Planning Workshop were:

1)    To equip teachers with innovative teaching methods

2)    To motivate teachers to execute creative teaching skills

3)    To share best practices on enhancing teachers roles in implementation of         CITS programme

Programme

The 2- days workshop comprised of 5 topics. The first-day of the workshop covered the following topics: Teaching techniques, Being an effective teacher and Assessing  writing & speaking while the second –day of the workshop covered answering techniques for Bahasa Melayu Kertas Pemahaman (Kertas 1) and Answering techniques for Bahasa Melayu Kertas Penulisan (Kertas 2). The details of the programme is attached as Appendix 1.

 

Resource Persons

The resource persons were Ms. Moganashangari Elumalai an English Educator at Training Minds, Sentul; and  Ms Sivakavitha, Guru Panitia Bahasa Melayu at SJK(T) Fletcher.

Attendance

The workshop was planned for 12 teachers (2 teachers from each of the 6 schools), however the actual attendance were 10 teachers ( SJK(T) Sithambararam Pillay -1, SJK(T) Mahathma Gandhi Kalasalai-1, SJK(T) Ladang Rini -2, SJK (T) Cantumaan Chaah-2, SJK(T) Ladang Senawang -2 and SJK(T) Port Dickson-2)

One teacher each from SJK(T) Sithambaram Pillay and SJ(T) Mahathma Gandhi Kalasalai were unable to attend due to health problems. Refer Appendix 2 for Attendance list.

Summary of Presentations

Day 1: 20 March 2018

Topic 1: Techniques of Teaching English as a Second Language

Speaker: Ms.Mogana, English Educator, Training Minds

Time: 1.45pm- 2.30pm

  1. Facilitator asked teachers on the problems faced by their students in studies.
  2. Few teachers responded as follows:
  • Students cannot think about  related answers
  • Students are poor in creative thinking skills

3. Facilitator suggested teachers to install ‘schoology app” which is used to upload subject related exercises and results obtained from the exercises.

4. Facilitator stressed that, it is teachers’ responsibility to ensure that they teach their students to progress well in studies.

5. Facilitator also explained on the teaching techniques, such as natural approach in the classroom, total physical response, dialogues or conversations, language experience approach and shared reading.

6. The ways to identify clever and weak students were  discussed.

7. Participants expressed their views on the ways of identifying the students’ academic level. One of the participants mentioned that they can easily identify the students’ level of intelligence by observing how they communicate with others.

 

 

 

Topic 2: Being an Effective Teacher

Speaker: Ms.Mogana, English Educator, Training Minds

Time: 2.30pm-3.45pm

1. Arrangement of students sitting positions can lead the students to get better or new ways in focusing subjects taught by teachers.

 

2. Improve teachers teaching methods

 

3. Teachers are suggested not to set boundaries on students’ academic performance but must encourage the students to perform well.

 

4. Few teaching techniques were discussed in this workshop.

 

5. Facilitator asked teachers on their target (eg. passing level) set for their students.

 

6. As the teachers indicated the targets, facilitator was not satisfied with their answers and therefore had to probe further to be more specific.

 

7. The session was interactive as participants raised a number of questions.

 

 

 

Topic 3: Assessing Writing & Speaking

 

  1. Resource person did not have the time to complete this topic, as Topic1 was started late due to delay in the arrival of participants.

 

  1. The relevant hand-outs were distributed to participants.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 2: 21 March 2018

Topic 1: Answering Techniques for BM Paper 1

Speaker: Ms.Sivakavitha, Panel Head for BM , SJKT Fletcher

Time: 10.00am-11.00am

1. Ms.Sivakavitha introduced herself and began the slot with a warm welcome.

 

2. Facilitator began the slot with techniques of answering the BM Paper 1 questions.

 

3. She explained on the format of BM Paper 1 test papers and the techniques for answering the questions.

 

4. The teachers participated actively by asking questions.

 

Topic 2: Answering Techniques for BM Paper 2

Speaker: Ms.Sivakavitha, Panel Head for BM , SJKT Fletcher

Time: 11.00am-12.30pm

 

1. Facilitator continued the next topic by explaining the techniques of answering the questions for BM Paper 2.

 

2. Facilitator emphasized on the role of teachers to improve students’ academic performance by delivering the correct methods to answer the questions.

 

3. Ms.Sivakavitha also requested the subject teachers to train students by giving them examination based questions to ensure they are able to answer the questions within the allocated time.

 

4. For example, ‘SALAM’ methods are used for BM part 1 questions which are making sentences correctly.

 

5. Few more answering techniques were also given in this workshop as it can benefit the teachers by adopting the methods in their teaching styles.

 

6. This workshop is conducted in two way communication as the participants are encouraged to read few questions pointed by facilitator and provide answers for it.

 

7. Marking scheme were also explained in this workshop.

 

8. Teachers felt this slot is very informative and gave the assurance to share the inputs with other teachers as well.

 

Note: CHILD keeps a copy of the resource  persons’  handouts.

 

Participants feedback

Participants feedback on workshop is presented in Appendix 3.Overall, the  participants felt that the workshop was effective for them. Similarly, the workshop logistics and contents were to the satisfaction of the participants.

The presentation by the resource person on day 1 was not well received by the participants as they perceived that the resource person is not mindful of the situation in the school and the constraints faced by the teachers.  The resource person is not a school teacher.

The day 2 presentation was well appreciated by the participants as majority of the students performed poorly in Bahasa Melayu.

4. Effectiveness of workshop

a)      One participant felt workshop not effective as he/ she preferred much more, while another participant requested for latest studies.
