SLOW LEARNERS PROGRAM (SLP) BOOK LAUNCH
ON 1ST JULY, 2010
The Slow learners Program (SLP) Vol 2 Book Launch was held at the Selangor State Government Secretariat Building on the 1st of July from 10.45 a.m to 12.30 p.m. The launch was attended by State Councilor YB Dato Xavier Jayakumar, YB Halima, MP, Dr. N. Iyngkaran the Program Director of CHILD, Mr. Arumugam, Trustee, CHILD, PIBG’s and Teachers from schools conducting the SLP Program, CHILD Staff and the Press.
YB. Dr. Xavier Jayakumar, YB Halima and Dr. N. Iyngkaran gave speeches on the occasion.
In his statement, YB Dr. Xavier Jayakumar said that the Selangor State Government strongly supports the initiatives undertaken by CHILD in developing the Slow Learners’ Program in the Tamil Schools in Selangor and how 60% of the children who were involved in this program have shown improvements within 3-6 months and which brings colossal benefits to the community and the nation.
YB Halima indicated in her speech that she was willing to work with CHILD in addressing the Slow Learners issues for Malay school children as well, as CHILD was very successful and experienced in this program.
Dr. Iyngkaran gave a descriptive speech on the SLP Program, the success rate , the methodology and the scope.
Dr. Iyngkaran thanked the CHILD Trustee, Mr. Arumugam and the Selangor State Government for their kind support. YB Dr Xavier Jayakumar then presented 10 sets of SLP Volume 2 Books (Modules) to YB Halima, MP and others present.

The Workshop on “Management on Quality Academy” was organized by the Child Information, Learning and Development Centre (CHILD) on the 26th of June 2010, from 8.30 a.m to 2.00 p.m at Wisma Tun Sambanthan- Tan Sri Dato K.R. Soma Hall. A total of 51 teachers from 12 schools attended the workshop.
The Speaker at the workshop was Mr. V. Wrickrama Suriya.
CHILD was represented by the Manager Madam P. Sarada Devi and Staff Mr. Kanna, Mr. Jerry and Miss Mangala.

Workshop on “Preparation of Remedial Modules” for UPSR Students
On 8th June, 2010
This workshop was held on 8th June 2010 from 8.30a.m to 4.00 p.m at Tan Sri Dato K.R. Soma Hall, Wisma Tun Sambanthan. A total of 28 teachers from 13 schools participated in the Workshop. The Program Director Dr. N. Iyngkaran, The Deputy Programme Director Dr. P. Kunaletchumy, The Manager Ms. P. Sarada Devi and CHILD Staff Mr. Jerry and Miss. Mangala represented from CHILD. Mr. Kumar facilitated this workshop.

The RAW Workshop in Penang was held on the 7th of May 2010 with a total of 7 participants fro 4 schools attending the workshop. The objectives were to revisit reading strategies and familiarize the participants with the Ladybird Reading Scheme and to plan stragies for the successful implementation of RAW Projects in the respective schools.

Dr Chin Heng Keng the facilitator explained the difference between the National PreSchool Curriculum and the National PreSchool Curriculum Standard.

This event was held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A total of 5 schools participated with 150 students taking part in the event. The Education Officer Mr. Madhavan, the CHILD Program Director Dr. N. Iyngkaran and the Deputy Director Dr. Kunaletchumy attended this event. Students, parents, and guests membered 350 in total.

The High Achievers Day was held at NUPW/ PLANTATION HALL from 8.45 a.m to 1.45 p.m, to honour the students who had performed outstandingly in the 2009 UPSR, obtaining 7 A’s, 6 A’s and 5 A’s respectively. A total of 651 guests attended the HIGH ACHIEVERS DAY, which included the Guest of Honour Yang Berhormat Dato R. Doraisingam Pillai, the chairman of CHILD Dato R. Thillainathan and the Program Director of CHILD Dr. N. Iybgkaran and the Deputy Program Director Dr. P. Kunaletchumi. A total of 15 schools participated and the numbers of High Achievers increased from 129 to 173 this year.

CHILD recently held a combined Preschool Thevaram Competition at SJK(T) Puchong Batu 14 on 23rd August 2009. A total of 140 children between the ages of 5 and 6 years from ten preschools namely Tadika Kinrara, Jayabakti, Rasak, Serdang, Bahrati, RRI, Effingham, Bandar Baru Sg. Buloh, Mahligai, West Country (Barat) and Vallalar 1 participated in the event. The event was officiated by Guest of Honour, Dr. Vijaya Shankar. SJK(T) Puchong GPK1, Mr. Malarvanan gave the opening address followed by CHILD’ s Programme Director, Dr. N Iyngkaran who called upon parents and teachers alike to instill the importance of spirituality in young children and thereby cultivating good human values to create a caring and nurturing community. He further stressed the need for Parents and Teachers to jointly organize such events to further strengthen community ties. Prizes were given away by Mr. Munusamy, PIBG Bandar Baru Sg. Buloh, Mr. Arumugam, HM of SJK(T) West Country and Mdm Sarada Devi, Manager CHILD.

To commemorate the launching of their Project Inspire (SLP) a Book Presentation Ceremony hosted by CHILD was held recently at SJK(T) Vivekananda Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya on 29th May 2009. It was attended by the School Head/Teachers and PIBG members of thirty (30) schools from Kuala Lumpur and Selangor . Also present were the board members of CHILD namely Dato’ Dr. R. Thillainathan (Chairman), Mr. K. Arumugam (Trustee), Dr. Iyngkaran (Programme Director) and Dr. P. Kunaletchumy (Deputy Programme Director). The Guest of Honour, Mr. Ravi Navaratnam gave a speech and presented each school with a set of SLP books.

MOCK-CHEQUE PRESENTATION CEREMONY HELD AT SUK SHAH ALAM

Tamil Schools in Selangor received a boost when the State Government presented a mock cheque for RM1.6mil via three coalition NGO”s ( CHILD,EWRF, Tamil Foundation) in conjunction with the official launching ceremony of the program for Upgrading the Standard of Education of 97 Selangor Tamil Schools at the foyer of the SSAAS Building, SUK Shah Alam, Selangor . It was organized by YB Dr. Xavier Jayakumar (Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri Selangor (EXCO)) and also Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Tetap Kesihatan, Pekerja Ladang, Kemiskinan dan Kerajaan Perihatin and officiated by the Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and jointly attended by ADUN (Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri), Parlimen members and NGOs.

CHILD organized a Preschool Sports Event at SJK(T) West Country (Barat) in Sepang with the cooperation and support of the school and PIBG. This event saw the participation of 279 children & 292 parents from 11 Preschools from Selangor. It was officiated by Datuk Marsom Paing ( ADUN, Dengkil )who congratulated and commended the Programme Directors of CHILD, Dr. N Iyngkaran and Dr. P Kunaletchumy for their continuing efforts and endeavours in upgrading and improving the standard of children in preschools by organizing such events. Datuk Marsom also encouraged other organizations to emulate these programs and work towards upgrading the education for betterment of our Indian students.

The Selangor State Government held a cheque presentation ceremony at the Armada Hotel, Petaling Jaya as a follow up of the MOCK cheque presentation held on 3rd June 2009. The function was well attended by ADUNS, representatives from several NGOs and the press. Selangor State Exco Member YB Dr. Xavier Jayakumar announced the names of schools selected for the various programs and highlighted the importance of Preschool education. He then presented cheques to the representatives from three (3) NGOs namely CHILD , Tamil Foundation , EWRF and also the Malaysia Parkinson Association .

PRESCHOOL STORYTELLING COMPETITION
SJK(T) KINRARA 29TH June 2009
The Selangor Preschool Storytelling Competition recently held at SJK(T) Kinrara on 29th June 2009 saw a total of 15 schools with 102 children & 148 parents participating in the event which was officiated by Guest of Honour, Mr. Oms Thiagarajan. Also present were CHILD Chairman Dato’ Dr. Thillainathan, Programme Director Dr. N Iyngkaran, Head Master Mr. John Posco and PIBG Chairman Mr. Michael, school officials and CHILD Coordinator and staff. Preschool children aged between 5 and 6 from 15 schools around Selangor took part in various competitions e.g. Story telling, Rhymes and Coloring competition judged by six judges from SJK(T) Ladang Hopeful headed by Headmistress Mdm Panjiniammal. Prizes were given away to the best three categories by the judges.

RAW TEACHERS’ TRAINING WORKSHOP
SJK(T) BATU CAVES 4TH JULY 2009
CHILD organized a Teachers Training Workshop at SJK(T) Batu Caves on 4th July 2009 with the support of the Selangor State Government. A total of 25 teachers from various schools around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor participated in this workshop which was conducted by Mr. Ramasamy, a RAW Facilitator cum retired lecturer from Johor. The event was officiated by Guest of Honour, YB Dr. Hjh Halimah bte Ali (EXCO PENDIDIKAN, PENDIDIKAN TINGGI DAN PEMBANGUNAN MODAL INSAN MERANGKAP)ADUN for SELAT KELANG who presented a set of Ladybird Series books to representatives from each school. She stressed the importance of English and commended CHILD in their vision to create and inculcate the reading habit among children in Tamil Schools so as to improve their reading proficiency and writing skills by implementing this program.

SLP TEACHERS’ TRAINING WORKSHOP
SJK(T) VIVEKANANDA 11TH JULY 2009
An SLP Teachers Training Workshop was organized by CHILD for 25 teachers from Tamil Schools in Kuala Lumpur at the SJK(T) Vivekananda on 11th July 2009. Event was officiated by Guest of Honour Mr. Nava Selvarajah, Trustee CHILD followed by an opening speech by the HM of SJK(T) Vivekananda, Mr. Balamohan. Mr. Nava Selavarajah commended CHILD for their efforts in providing opportunities to Slow Learners to at least acquire the basic skills of reading and writing and to ensure holistic development of the student. He than presented a set of SLP Modules to the representatives from each school. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Thiagarajah, a SLP Facilitator and a lecturer from Kedah and his team of lecturers. The objective of the training was to empower teachers with the knowledge and know-how on conducting classes for Slow Learners so that every child will have equal opportunity to be absorbed into mainstream classes with this SLP Program.
